A few years ago, mobile app testing services was still seen as a subset of functional testing services an organization would provide. Mobile testing primarily meant mobile app testing focusing on the end user facing components. However, today, the mobile app testing services is a large domain of its own. It covers the end user facing app portion for the large part, but also a bunch of other components such as mobile platform, device management, quality attributes such as performance, security in relation to the app and the device amongst others. Also, a smart mobile device today has become a hub for varied other integration points including computing technologies around wearables, internet of things, virtual reality etc.
Whether one is a tester by profession or not, we are all mobile testers in some sense today – studies show that by 2020, most under the age 25 will be digitally savvy. And most of this savviness will be a result of mobile usage. Smart phone market is also continuing to grow leaps and bounds with developing nations like India ranking second in global consumption. With all of this, we as a human race have become adept with mobile app testing – we shop online, transact online, experience scenarios online etc. This is where the app development teams will have to be extra watchful. The mobile user who is a pseudo tester in one sense of a mobile app, has so much more access to raise feedback in social forums on the good, bad and ugly of a product – this is especially a wake up call for mobile app freelance developers. One cannot settle with just a front end facing mobile app testing effort, that is ad hoc/extempore and an after-thought (note – I am not referring to exploratory testing here) – a holistic app testing effort, acknowledging the fact that mobile app testing services is a large domain in itself is important to bring in specialized areas of test focus – skilled testers in functional and non-functional mobile scenarios, device management, automated solutions, will all need to be taken into consideration. So, is the case for testing aspirants – Don’t call yourself a mobile application testing expert without clear areas of focus. Build your niche within the mobile app testing world to give yourself an edge, for mobile computing is here to stay in the long run and in some sense we have only scratched the tip of the iceberg.
