Big Data in the e-Learning Domain

ELearning has undoubtedly gained popularity in the last decade. It is not restricted to any specific domain or age group of users. While enough is talked about in the industry about commercial and open source e-Learning solutions, learning and content management systems (LMS/CMS), one space that is just beginning to be noticed is the use of big data in e-Learning. The volumes of data that the learning industry processes and the impact of such data in enhancing the effectiveness of the imparted learning sessions are all significant enough that this practice deserves special attention of its own.

At QA InfoTech we have a specialized practice on data sciences and analytics of which data quality is a core offering we provide. Given our forte in the learning and publishing domains, data quality for the learning domain is a piece we are certainly well versed with. This includes testing for big data apps, creating tools to better analyse data to make informed decisions, detecting defects along with security and performance aspects around data.

Learning Record Stores (LRS) form the core of big data in the learning world. They help track the student’s involvement and performance across courses and time periods, predict evaluation complexities and the lecturer competency amongst other things such as student-lecturer interaction, overall course efficiency that is tracked across varied parameters. LRSs span varied technologies, and are available in plenty across the open source and commercial world. Tools used in conjunction with LRSs and underlying LMSs are increasingly making data more meaningful and associated decisions more informed, but more importantly are being used by teams that are not neccesarily technical in making educated business decisions. Given the growing importance of e-Learning across domains and industries the happy marriage between learning apps and the core data ecosystem is certainly inevitable in today’s age of digital operations.
